Created by: Gardner Fox and Murphy Anderson
First Appearance: Hawkman #4 (October–November 1964)
Secret Identity: Zatanna Zatarra
Team Affiliations: Seven Soldiers of Victory, Justice League, Sentinels of Magic
Powers: Zatanna’s powers stem from her lineage as a Homo Magi – a race of incredibly powerful sorcerers. She is able to command elemental forces, heal, transmute, transmogrify objects, manipulate minds, attack opponents with energy blasts, manipulate time and space, manipulate fire, air, water, and earth. Zatanna speaks her spells backwards as a way to concentrate all of her powers through a specific focal point. The degree of her power is also dependent on her self-confidence.
Zatanna is the daughter of Golden Age magician and superhero John Zatara. Zatanna is part Homo Magi from her mother’s side, a mystic tribe of sorcerers called the Hidden Ones. Zatanna inherited her magical powers from her mother. Following in her father’s footsteps, Zatanna created a stage persona for herself and a superhero career. She’s had a brief affair with John Constantine and the two remain close friends. Zatanna has also had heavy flirtations and close relationships with both the Flash (Barry Allen) and Batman (Bruce Wayne). She is a well respected long-standing member of the Justice League of America and is the all-around go to for all things mystical in the DC Universe.
Why She Should Be Showcased?
Zatanna should be showcased because, for all intents and purposes, she should be an A-list super-heroine. Wonder Woman is the pre-eminent female superhero in the DC Universe, followed quite closely by Supergirl but Zatanna SHOULD be standing toe-to-toe with them. There is no male counterpart with her powers and abilities (an argument could be made for Dr. Fate), so that is a niche that she alone sits atop. She has a pleasant disposition and her adventures are fun and often bizarre. A corner of the DC Universe that is virtually untapped.
