Probably one of my favourite Kevin Bacon movies of all time. Released at the end of the decade of excess, Tremors does appear to be showing its age and comes off a bit dated now – particularly with the fashions, music and machismo; but it’s an exciting romp. The few local residents of an isolated desert community try to survive and escape an onslaught from a small colony of subterranean flesh-eating worm like creatures that hunt through vibration and sound. The arsenal of guns toting NRA couple played by Steven Gross and Reba McIntyre are pretty funny as our much of Kevin Bacon’s hayseed quips. The comraderie between stars Bacon and Fred Ward were delightfully entertaining as well. Tremors was different for the era it came out in. Slashers were the genre du jour in 1990 and Tremors seemed like a bit of fresh air. Of course, it didn’t escape the curse of sequelitis that was all the rage in the ’80’s and early ’90’s and three subsequent Tremors movies followed the original. They are all recycled gags from the original and not really worth watching. But the original is a good monster movie classic.
