Former Buffy the Vampire Slayer alums Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard craft a very funny and entertaining homage to their favourite horror movie conventions that they grew up with. But make no mistake, although the film has some humour, it is by no means a comedy. It’s got sexy college kids heading to a rustic cabin for the weekend to partake in the activities that one would expect of 5 college kids heading to a rustic cabin in the woods would do; but unbeknownst to these hapless young victims, their fates are entirely in the hands of a malevolent organization looking to orchestrate their deaths by any means necessary. Part of the enjoyment of the movie is trying figure out just what exactly is going on. It’s fun. It’s familiar, yet different. It’s really frickin’ good! I won tickets at Comic-Con to go and see this film and I ended up seeing it in a theatre full of Buffy nerds. They hooted and hollered everytime they saw cameos by characters that starred in other Joss Whedon vehicles (Buffy, Angel, Avengers, Dollhouse most notably), and there was also a special Q and A with the director of the film, Drew Goddard, after the movie which definitely added to the enjoyable experience I had with this movie.
