Comic Book Thought Balloon: The Watchmen and Charlton Comics

The Watchmen

“October 12, 1985. Tonight, a Comedian died in New York”.

In 1986, we were given the monumental series “The Watchmen” which was inspired and based on the classic Charlton Comics Characters that were acquired by DC Comics in the early 1980’s. For some reason or another, DC didn’t want Alan Moore to do such a dark and grim story featuring their fairly recent acquisitions so he devised the Watchmen — Nite Owl, Rorschach, Dr. Manhattan, The Comedian, Silk Spectre, and Ozymandias standing in for Charlton’s Blue Beetle, The Question, Captain Atom, Peacemaker, Nightshade, and Thunderbolt respectively.

As the fates would have it, The Watchmen became a monumental success topping best seller’s lists for over 20 years (the book has never stopped being printed), helped change the depth of storytelling in the mid-80’s, and had a “successful” feature film in 2009.

The Charlton Characters never really amounted to that level of acclaim.

BUT…what if the Watchmen story had actually been told with the Charlton Characters? What would have become of those heroes? I think it would have been even better in my opinion.

WHAT OTHER CORNER OF THE DC UNIVERSE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE RE-IMAGINED IN THE WATCHMEN STYLE?
